You Before, Me
“By this, we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” 1 John 3:16
I just finished watching a Korean movie on Netflix called Train to Busan. Others may call this one of the best zombie movies ever, but I have nothing to compare it to since I don’t usually watch films like this. Thanks to my Tia Miya for recommending it to me and allowing me to experience the journey I went on while watching this film. I am finding it hard to express what this movie has done for me; it brings so much raw emotion out of me that I did not even know I had.
It is about a father and his young daughter; He is a self-centered workaholic that has neglected her. On her Birthday they go on a train to see her mom in Busan. Her parents are divorced. Everything is going to plan until a strange passenger comes on board the train, she is bleeding, and clearly, she does not look well, so I am sure you can already tell that this is how the zombies come about. That is when the chaos starts happening.
Besides the father and daughter, the other character that also moved me was a man with his pregnant wife. He has the brooding strength that overwhelms the screen but at the same time you can see what kind of heart he has.
“He who has found his life shall lose it, and he who has lost his life for my sake shall find it” Matthew 10:39
This film has helped me reflect on what human nature is and what it can be. I do not want to give away too much of the movie, but the message of self-sacrifice was genuinely heartbreaking.
This picture was not about the zombies itself; they were just the crisis that leads to the lessons that they needed to learn to love others. Even if you don’t like zombies, I will say to you if there is some way that you can pay more attention to the message of the story, then I highly recommend you giving this a try.
